Chinese tourists drive 20.7% of Japan’s foreign visitor spending in Q2
The Japan National Tourism Organization released data for foreign visitors to Japan in the first half of the year. As of June 2024, the cumulative number of foreign visitors to Japan reached 17.77 million, a 65.9% YoY increase and an increase of over 1 million compared to the same period in 2019, which had 16.63 million visitors. Among the top-five source countries for foreign visitors to Japan, mainland China ranked second with 3.068 million visitors. South Korea ranked first with 4.442 million visitors. According to survey data collected at airports and seaports, in the second quarter, Chinese visitors to Japan spent approximately 442 billion yen (about $2.98 billion), accounting for 20.7% of the total spending by foreign tourists, higher than other countries.
