Macau tops China’s tourism revenue in 2023

Macau generated $32.6 billion in tourism revenue last year, making it the top earner in China according to the UN’s World Tourism Organisation. This marked a 275% increase from the previous year, driven by the lifting of pandemic travel restrictions in early 2023. Internationally, Macau ranked 13th, outperforming larger destinations like India and Mexico. The US led globally with US$176 billion in tourism revenue, followed by Spain, the UK, France, and Italy. China regained its position as the top international tourism spender with $197.7 billion. Macau’s tourism has flourished post-pandemic, with 28.23 million visitors in 2023 and an expected increase to 33 million in 2024.
