As China's health and wellness industry undergoes rapid transformation, brands and businesses are increasingly focusing on holistic solutions to meet evolving consumer demands. To examine these shifts, Jing Daily hosted an exclusive webinar, “The Future of China's Health and Wellness Market,” on October 8, 2024. The event provided specialized insights and expert commentary drawn from the latest findings in Jing Daily's China Health and Wellness Market Report 2024. Our panel of experts was moderated by Jing Daily beauty editor Lisa Nan, and featured illuminating insights from Matthias Terrettaz, general manager of Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai; Danni Liu partner and general manager of Europe Office at iBlue Group; and Zarina Kanji, managing director of the UK & EU at WPIC Marketing & Technologies. The talk highlighted key themes shaping China’s dynamic wellness industry including: Holistic and preventative wellness China’s health market has evolved beyond traditional beauty and fitness into a holistic lifestyle integrating physical, mental, and spiritual health. This approach reflects a growing trend among consumers, especially Millennials and Gen Z, to prioritize wellness across all aspects of life, from eco-friendly cleaning products to high-quality supplements. The emphasis on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), digital wellness solutions, and mental health indicates a focus on preventative care, longevity, and stress relief. Generational preferences Different age groups show unique wellness preferences. Gen Z and Millennials prioritize efficient, convenient wellness solutions like fitness apps and mental wellness programs, while older generations lean toward social activities and maintaining active lifestyles. The silver generation, for example, seeks social connectivity and quality of life through adult education and group wellness activities, while younger generations increasingly embrace outdoor activities and digital wellness tracking. Luxury and wellness convergence The integration of wellness into luxury lifestyles is a notable trend, with luxury brands and hotels offering wellness-centric services as part of high-end experiences. For instance, Bulgari Hotels integrates renowned spa treatments to meet the expectations of high-spending clients. The panelists noted a growing interest in unique wellness experiences, like spa treatments in luxury hotels and community-driven wellness events by brands like Lululemon. Emerging wellness trends Trends like "punk health" and "lying flat" (a response to workplace pressure favoring minimalism and slow living) reflect Chinese consumers' desire for balance and personal well-being amid fast-paced urban life. Additionally, "spiritual wellness" has gained popularity, with younger consumers engaging in practices like “digital detox” and temple visits to reduce social pressures and reconnect with themselves. Growth potential China’s wellness market, currently the world’s second largest, is expected to expand, driven by technological advances and evolving consumer needs across all generations. The panel emphasized the growing demand for wellness products and experiences as China’s consumer base matures, highlighting opportunities for both domestic and international brands to innovate and tailor offerings to this lucrative market.
