China Craft Brewers Collaborate On Porcine Tribute For Shanghai Beer Week

"Porky's Revenge Imperial Pilsner" To Debut In May As a (tongue-in-cheek) tribute to the thousands of dead pigs recently plucked from the Huangpu River, the trio of brewmasters behind Shanghai's top craft breweries -- The BREW , Dr. Beer , and Boxing Cat Brewery -- have teamed up for a new collaboration beer, "Porky's Imperial Pilsner." Dark humor aside, the collaboration brew celebrates the upcoming launch of Shanghai Beer Week 2013 , the country's original craft beer festival, the second installment of which will hit the city from May 17-26. Inspired by LARGER by New Zealand's Epic Brewing Company, brewmasters Leon Mickelson (The BREW), Teddy Gowan (Dr. Beer) and Michael Jordan (Boxing Cat Brewery) sought to create a beer with high drinkability despite its relatively high alcohol content (8.5 percent). The unique hop profile of Porky's Imperial Pilsner includes notes of pine as well as citrus notes of lemon and lime, and light pineapple. The malt, yeast and hops used in the brew were provided courtesy of New Zealand Hops, White Labs, and Castle Malting. The new Imperial Pilsner is the latest collaboration beer for the Boxing Cat's Jordan, who Jing Daily readers will remember has done three domestic and cross-border brews over the past year, with Beijing's Great Leap Brewing (Yunnan Amber), Danish brewer Mikkeller (Bruce ChiLee IPA), and Welsh craft brewery The Celt Experience (Cat Scratched Celt). Slated to debut at the kick-off party of Shanghai Beer Week 2013 on May 17, part of the proceeds from the sale of the collaboration brew will be donated to charity.
