Moleskine "Detour" Exhibition Attracts Crowds In Shanghai

ΩExhibition Features Moleskine Notebooks Decorated By 50 Designers And Artists, Including 24 From Greater China Moleskine's Detour, running until November 20 in Shanghai Recently, Moleskine's "Detour" exhibition, curated by Raffaella Guidobono, launched at Shanghai's Bund 18. Featuring 50 Moleskine notebooks -- the ubiquitous black pads favored by artists, designers and writers around the world -- decorated by 50 well-known artists and designers (24 of them from Greater China), the group show has packed in the crowds. As Jing Daily pointed out in our first post on the "Detour" exhibition back in August, Detour encourages free-form creation, and as such notebooks in the show can include everything from short stories, 3D designs, papercuts and watercolors. A world-wide exhibition, Detour has previously been hosted by cities like London (2006), New York (2007), Paris (2008), Berlin (2008), Istanbul (2009) and Tokyo (2009) and Venice (summer 2010). In Shanghai, crowds have been attracted by notebooks designed by local superstars like the writer and blogger Han Han and fashion designer Jenny Ji, filmmakers like Jia Zhangke (previously on Jing Daily), and art critic Hu Fang. From the Wall Street Journal: At [the recent opening of Detour at Bund 18], guests balanced champagne flutes in one hand, and donned white gloves a la Michael Jackson on the other so they could flip through the notebooks, which ranged from the surreal reimagination of Dutch artist Joep Van Lieshout's notebook—it has been embedded into a rock—and the whimsy of Dutch-born designer Tord Boontje's papercuts, to the nonchalant notes of Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke and Chinese writer, blogger and race-car driver Han Han. Others, such as Chinese artist Han Bing and photographer Xuanmin Jin, created Moleskine notebooks that acted as scrapbooks of their work. Architect Ma Yansong (of the firm MAD in Beijing—he has won awards for his design of Solar Plaza in Guangzhou and the Shanghai Digital Art Center), product designer Carl Liu, Hong Kong rock musician MC Yan and artists Li Shoubai and Yang Yongliang opted to fill their pages with elaborate doodles and drawings. Other big names from China include fashion designers Jenny Ji, Joseph Li and Lu Kun, artist and curator Ou Ning, art critic and novelist Hu Fang, furniture designer Lv Yongzhong and the design and architecture team of Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu. Additionally, running alongside the Detour exhibition until November 20, the “myDetour” project give Chinese creatives the opportunity to submit their work for inclusion in the myDetour “online museum” at one of four collection points throughout Shanghai. Since 2007, similar myDetour projects have collected thousands of contributions in New York, Tokyo, Berlin, San Francisco and other cities, and the submissions from Shanghai this year will be included in next year’s traveling exhibition. Moleskine will also collaborate with Shanghai's Tongji University, a local design and arts academy, to collect designs from local up-and-coming talent.
