Massive Luxury Resort Takes Over One Side Of Abandoned Rock Quarry A rendering of the Intercontinental Shimao resort currently under construction. (Rex Features) When you combine China's luxury resort boom and the fact that the country is seeing some of the world's most innovative architecture projects, you get to see plans like this: a massive luxury resort construction project on the side of an abandoned quarry. Announced last year, ground has officially been broken on the InterContinental Shimao hotel, which, in addition to luxury accommodations, will include water sports, rock-climbing, and bungee jumping activities. The 19-story resort being built at the base of Tianmenshan Mountain in the Songjiang District outside Shanghai will feature two underwater floors, which will contain an aquarium, restaurant, guest rooms, swimming pool, and sports center. The resort is expected to open in 2015. Another rendering of the resort. (Rex Features) The quarry under construction. (Rex Features)
