Survey By Chinese Travel Site Ctrip Finds Mainland Tourists Looking For Convenience, Natural Beauty, High-Quality Facilities Last week, travelers in mainland China hit the road in droves to celebrate Lunar New Year during the country's "Golden Week" (previously). According to a new survey released by the Chinese online travel site Ctrip, more Chinese took advantage of Golden Week this year to head to tourist destinations rather simply spending time with family. While it might seem obvious to use a 10-day holiday to do some sightseeing, it is important to note that it's a relatively new phenomenon to do so during Chinese New Year. In their survey of New Year tourists, Ctrip found that Beijing this year overtook Shanghai to become the country's top destination for Golden Week tourists. From People's Daily: The top-10 most popular domestic tourist destination cities are Beijing, Hong Kong, Sanya, Xiamen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Nanjing. In terms of the number of arrivals, Xiamen and Sanya saw the highest growth. There was also a considerable increase in the number of tourists arriving in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu. Travel experts at ctrip.com finally produced the most popular tourist destination city rankings after conducting comprehensive research and analyzing reservations of hotels, air tickets and travel and vacation packages in major cities and tourist destinations for this year's Spring Festival Golden Week holiday, as well as webpage views and searches. Experts believe that the 10 most popular tourist destination cities are generally characterized as having beautiful natural landscapes, rich cultural resources, easy-to-shop areas, and travel facilities. In addition, taking a tour to spend the Spring Festival Golden Week holiday was much more popular with urban citizens in 2010 whose interests in travel have been on the noticeable increase. The increasing number of domestic tourists hitting Beijing, Sanya and Hangzhou certainly gave retailers reason to smile this week -- they likely had something to do with China's more than 17% rise in retail sales during Lunar New Year, year-over-year.
