    Italy’s Hogan taps Jianci Tan as brand rep#

    Italian luxury brand Hogan on February 19 announced singer and actor Jianci Tan as the brand’s ambassador. Established in 1986, Hogan is part of the Italian luxury conglomerate Tod’s Spa.

    Estée Lauder teams up with Shuting Qiu#

    Estée Lauder partnered with Chinese fashion designer Shuting Qiu to launch the Estée Lauder X Shuting Qiu limited-edition makeup collection. The collaboration combines traditional Chinese elements with modern fashion trends. Inspired by classical Chinese art, the collection features vibrant colors and intricate floral patterns, creating a fusion of art and makeup.

    Zhao Lusi stars in Versace campaign#

    Versace has released its 2024 Spring/Summer collection advertisement, featuring global brand ambassador Zhao Lusi. In this series of ads, Chinese actress Zhao is seen wearing a satin mini dress adorned with dazzling details, paired with a structured checkered tweed jacket, washed denim jeans, and the new Medusa'95 handbag.

    Grace Chen to launch 1st ready-to-wear collection#

    Chinese designer brand Grace Chen is set to launch its first ready-to-wear collection this spring. This collection is inspired by the daily lives of elite women, extending into more simplistic, comfortable styles suitable for diverse occasions, allowing for sleek and efficient dressing.

    Hanfu clothing sales surge#

    JD.com yesterday reported a surge in sales of traditional Hanfu clothing categories, such as horse-faced skirts, which saw an over 300 percent year-on-year increase since January, with a 325 percent increase during the Spring Festival period. Ming Dynasty-style horse-faced skirts were among the most popular items, including various designs like the Han-Tang-style long coat with horse-faced skirt and the Zhonglingji light pink horse-faced skirt with hundred birds facing the phoenix.

    Swiss watch exports to China rise#

    Swiss watch exports rose modestly in January, with growth slowing due to weak demand for luxury and mid-priced watches. Despite a 3.1 percent increase in exports by value, compared to a growth rate of 11.8 percent in the first half of last year, the number of timepieces exported rose by only 2.9 percent. Economic and geopolitical concerns have led buyers to rein in spending on pricey Swiss watches, while exports to the US rose modestly and those to Mainland China increased by 5 percent, with a decrease of 4.7 percent to Hong Kong. Despite reaching a record high in 2023, the growth rate in the luxury watch industry slowed significantly in the second half of the year as consumers became more cautious.

    JD.com eyes acquisition of UK retailer#

    JD.com has revealed its interest in acquiring Britain’s electrical retailer Currys, following reports of a potential takeover bid by US-based investor Elliot Advisors. Currys, which recently rejected Elliot’s cash offer of 62 pence ($0.78) per share, witnessed a significant surge in its stock price, jumping up to 37 percent. JD.com, still in the preliminary stages of evaluation, is considering a cash offer for the entire issued share capital of Currys. The potential acquisition comes as Currys faces challenges in profit growth amid economic pressures.

    Hong Kong’s birth rate ticks up#

    The number of babies born in Hong Kong rose for the first time in six years in 2023, propelling the SAR’s population to 7.5 million from 7.47 million, census figures show. The region’s Census and Statistics Department announced the city had recorded 33,200 births last year, a 2 percent increase over 2022, and the first uptick since 2017. The government attributes the rise to talent recruitment schemes and Hongkongers returning from overseas.

    Xi’an Datang Everbright City retains China’s tourism crown#

    According to data from Gaode Maps released today, during the 2024 Spring Festival holiday, the most popular tourist attraction in terms of traffic volume was the Xi’an Datang Everbright City, which has held the top spot for two consecutive years. Other popular attractions that made it to the top 10 for two consecutive years include West Lake, Fenghuang Ancient Town, Mount Laojun, Mount Putuo, Dali Ancient Town, and Beihai Silver Beach.
