This week, it was reported that JWT North East Asia executive creative director and China chairman, Lo Sheung Yan, will be the first ever Chinese jury chair at next year's Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. China's visibility at the festival has risen steadily in recent years, with the country ranking joint 14th place (along with Canada) and winning its first-ever Grand Prix in 2011. Calling Lo Sheung Yan's appointment on the jury "momentous," Cannes chairman Terry Savage said this week, "Great creative work is coming from all over the world and countries that have never won major awards before are now sharing the stage with the more traditional winning countries."

    From AdAge:

Choosing a creative based in mainland China to preside over a Cannes jury for the first time reflects the country's growing creative prowess and ability to pick up Lions at Cannes, culminating in this year's Grand Prix win. Highlighting China's increasing importance at international ad festivals, the announcement was made by the Cannes Lions' chairman, Terry Savage, at a press conference in Shanghai on Thursday.

[Lo Sheung Yan] has previously judged awards both regionally and internationally, and has been a judge at the Cannes festival twice. He's also a playwright and an actor, and has written lyrics for Asian pop songs and musicals.

In other news on the advertising and marketing front, Saatchi & Saatchi announced this week that it will show its New Directors' Showcase reel for the first time in China on November 11 at Shanghai's ROI Festival.
