Mercato, one of the most recent additions to Three on the Bund’s collection of award-winning restaurants, is Vongerichten’s second restaurant in Shanghai, perched just two stories above the eponymous Jean-Georges -- an interpretive homage to French cuisine and the chef's first signature restaurant outside of New York.

Chef Vongerichten, along with Chef de Cuisine Sandy Yoon, present a total sensory dining experience at Mercato, inspired by the tastes, smells, sounds, and sights of Coastal Italy that embody the meaning of “agrarian chic.”

Designed by visionary design team Neri&Hu, the Mercato space seamlessly blends organic and rustic with modern, industrial elegance. Reclaimed wood and warm leather tones soften the exposed steel, iron and glass to create an atmosphere that is timely yet harks to a pastoral past.

Illuminated by the glow of an Italian wood-burning oven, Mercato's Pizza Lounge fires Jean-Georges’s new “light as air” pizzas, adorned with bright Italian toppings. Expecting nothing less from the star-studded gastro-genius, the Mercato Bar features a completely original selection of cocktails made with the finest Italian spirits, freshly muddled fruits and aromatics, as well as an intriguing array of Italian wines. Finally, Mercato’s prime location offers guests stunning views of the Bund and the Pudong skyline.

While indeed luxurious, Mercato seeks a “decidedly simple and understated” splendor, a refreshing take on the often overly opulent Shanghai dining scene. Likewise refreshing is Jean-Georges’s efforts to push fine dining in China in a new direction -- a non-French direction. We cannot wait to try Mercato for ourselves.
