Evolving out of the two-decade-old Long Bar on bustling Nanjing West Rd., CVRVE goes against Shanghai's prevailing nightlife model by creating a decidedly upscale scene centered around champagne and sophistication rather than strobe lights and buzz. The 450 square meter space, located inside the historic Shanghai Centre -- a sprawling complex that houses nearly 500 luxury apartments, 30,000 square meters of office space, a movie theatre and the five-star Portman Ritz-Carlton -- provides a refuge from the breakneck pace of downtown Shanghai, with emphasis on comfortable surroundings, innovative cocktails, and glamorous high tea service.

At CVRVE's opening event last week, Jing Daily found that the bar succeeds in its focus on being a destination for well-heeled Shanghai locals as well as international professionals, rather than another expat bar or over-the-top "ultralounge." The decor is tasteful and relaxing, rather than distracting, and the energy level is just right, infusing CVRVE with a sophisticated air that's hard to come by in Shanghai. As luxurious as the venue itself is, CVRVE's cocktails -- formulated by mixologist Pablo Toledo -- stand out. Putting his own spin on CVRVE's champagne-centric drinks menu with acrobatic flame displays and creations found nowhere else in Shanghai, Pablo's cocktails speak for themselves.

In addition to its extensive cocktail and champagne list, CVRVE also offers executive lunches, "rush hour" after-work drinks specials, private event space, and evening sessions from renowned dancers, DJs and guest mixologists. Mediterranean cuisine from chef Enzo Carbone (Issimo, Salvatore Como, 208) perfectly compliments the drinks menu, and stands on its own for those looking for a fresh, calm bite amid the clutter and crowds of Nanjing Road.
