Launching in advance of the 2012 Beijing International Automotive Expo, American automaker Cadillac is set to run its "Dramatic Journey" (百年风范之旅) art and design exhibition from April 21 through May 15 at Beijing's National Convention Center. Curated by Xiao Xiaolan, the exhibition will include works by dozens of renowned Chinese and international artists displayed alongside nine Cadillac models, ranging from antique to concept, tracing the development of the automaker's design over the past 110 years. Artists to be displayed at the exhibition include Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle, Stuart Davis, Zao Wou-ki, and blue-chip Chinese contemporary painters like Wang Guangyi, Fang Lijun, Zhang Xiaogang and Yue Minjun.

Works on show will include Warhol's "Marilyn Monroe," "Hot Still Scape for Six Colors-Seventh Avenue Style, 1940" by Davis, LaChapelle's "Art in the Streets," Zao Wou-ki's 1952 painting "Burgos Church in Spain," Wang Guangyi's early piece "Madonna and Child" (圣母子), and Zhang Xiaogang's "I Remember - Planche No. 8."

As Xiao Xiaolan, exhibition curator and academic director of the Shanghai Art Museum, said this week, "Dramatic Journey" is in essence a show about the ties between the US and China. Despite the background of American auto culture and visual arts, the exhibition uses the Cadillac models to trace different periods in 20th and 21st century art both in Western countries and in China. As such, Xiao sees the show as an opportunity for engagement and consideration of China's broader opening to the world over the past few decades.

According to Cadillac's official announcement (Chinese), the exhibition will be divided into four main sections: "Origins," "Breakthrough," "Attention" and "Imagination." Starting with works representative of the early years of independent art exhibitions in the first quarter of the 20th century, the show progresses through the development of abstract expressionism in the 1930s and 1940s, the pop art explosion of the 1950s and '60s, and emergence of Chinese contemporary art since the late 1970s.

Throughout, art is paired with the most representative and iconic Cadillacs from each period, from the Harley Earl-designed LaSalle (1927-1940) to Salvador Dali's beloved Fleetwood Sixty, a classic Eldorado and a one-of-a-kind Model M.

Tickets for the exhibition are available through the Cadillac China website.
