Far from intimidated by a decrease in spending and traffic from mainland China, British footwear designer Rupert Sanderson opened his fourth location in Hong Kong this week at the swish Landmark shopping center. This store joins others in China at Harbour City and Elements Mall, as well as the sole mainland China store at Shanghai ifc.
Located on the Landmark’s atrium, Rupert Sanderson joins more than 200 stores and restaurants in the mall. The store design is consistent with other Sanderson locations, featuring wood paneling and a gold splatter wall, as well as the brand’s signature “pebble” design elements on door handles, tables, and lighting.
As he did last year to celebrate the opening of the Shanghai ifc location, Sanderson has released an exclusive collection of styles in honor of the new Landmark store. Named the Calice, Royal Oak, Bedfa, and Messina, the special-edition shoes incorporate the brand’s trademark gold heel.
As Sanderson told Jing Daily last summer, his strategy for tackling a complex China market is step-by-step. According to Sanderson,
A lot of awareness work has been done over the last three or four years in Hong Kong, so while we have good awareness in Hong Kong, we still have a lot of work to do in China. We are doing this store by store… so that will help us build our name and awareness in that enormously important market. We are also doing marketing and hopefully getting some local celebrity endorsements to help build our awareness and what we stand for.
