2,000 Sq. M. Golf Center Opens To The Public At “Affordable Luxury” Prices
Golf is taking off in China, at least among the country’s upper crust, but for hundreds of millions of Chinese the sport remains very much out of reach. However, a massive new indoor driving range in Shenzhen looks to deconstruct golf’s luxury image and give more of the country’s lao bai xing (common people) the opportunity to take a swing.
After a total investment of over 40 million yuan (US$5.9 million), Asia’s largest indoor golf center — which covers an area of more than 2,000 sq. meters — recently opened in Shenzhen’s Futian District. Golf enthusiasts can make themselves at home here and enjoy the fun of golfing while breaking through the “luxury aura” that surrounds the sport, since the general public can give it a shot for less than 200 yuan (US$29).
The article goes on to note that the rise in popularity of indoor golf ranges should satisfy the “dual interest in ‘low-carbon [lifestyles]’ and sports” common among Shenzhen’s golf lovers.
