Last night, in Beijing’s 798 District’s Creative Square, Audi held their first Art and Design Awards to celebrate China’s last 30 years of art, design, performance, film and interdisciplinary fields. Over the past year, the Arts of China program interviewed close to 50 top creatives before selecting the winners to announce at the annual grant award party. The first Audi Art and Design Awards had five categories: the best “Newcomer” award was won by director Ning Hao, the annual “Emerging Design” award was given to designer Liu Zhizhi, the annual “Tribute” award was given to musician Tan Dun, the annual “Design” award to architect Liu Jiakun, and the “30-year Accomplishment” award was given to artist Xu Bing.

Artron reports that each award winner will also receive US$ 10,000, an incentive provided by Audi to further the Arts of China and draw attention to the principles of “inheritance, innovation, and leadership.” Xu Bing was presented the “30-year Accomplishment” award, the prize money, and a specially donated Audi Coupe by actress Maggie Cheung and Jin Shangyi, the former president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
