New Store Openings: J. Lindeberg, Chaumet, Double Standard Clothing

Recent store openings from the Greater China region, from Swedish label J. Lindeberg’s first flagship in Shanghai to Chaumet’s 20th boutique and the Hong Kong debut of Japan’s Double Standard Clothing.

J.Lindeberg Opens First China Flagship

Looking to capture more of the fast-growing premium menswear and golf apparel market, Swedish label J. Lindeberg recently opened its first Chinese flagship at Shanghai’s Grand Gateway Plaza. At the opening, J.Lindeberg China GM Kristian Goth Vinther said that the brand plans to use the flagship as a springboard for greater expansion throughout China. Said Vinther, ”This is just the beginning of our plan. China will be an important market for J.Lindeberg, one with a lot of opportunities.”

Though several brands are cutting back on brick-and-mortar expansion in China this year amid slower economic growth, J. Lindeberg — as a relatively new brand to the market, and one targeting a lucrative high-end niche — said it plans to open 30 stores in more than 10 cities throughout the country by the end of this year. An ambitious effort, to say the least.

Chaumet Opens 20th Boutique In China

Another brand that continues to expand its physical presence in China is the LVMH-owned French jeweler Chaumet, which recently opened its 20th boutique in China and second in the northeastern city of Shenyang, Liaoning province.

With the opening of this location, China accounts for one-quarter of Chaumet’s total worldwide stores. However, considering the brand’s success in the market — China accounts for 60 percent of the company’s annual turnover — it’s not entirely surprising that the jeweler remains confident about its prospects. Recently, Chaumet CEO Thierry Fritsch recently told the Financial Times, “I’m not very worried about a slowdown in Asia. Chinese purchases have held up well. I am very confident in Asia’s long-term prospects.”

While some Japanese brands have a bit of a tough time in mainland China, Japan’s Double Standard Clothing recently made its debut in Hong Kong, opening its first store outside of its home country at the city’s new Hysan Place mall. At the grand opening, DSC’s Norishisa Nagata said that he sees Hong Kong as a “significant platform for launching our brand and expansion into mainland China.” No word on whether they’ll push back those plans, given current tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.
