    Lane Crawford Joins Retailers' Rush To Mainland With Shanghai Opening

    As niche designers rise in popularity in China, Lane Crawford joins several department stores opening their doors on the mainland this fall.

    Completing a trifecta of major new department store openings in China this fall that included 10 Corso Como in Shanghai and Galeries Lafayette in Beijing, Lane Crawford opened the doors of its new China flagship store in Shanghai on October 10.

    The 150,000 square-foot store is located in Shanghai’s Times Square on Huai Hai Zhong Road, and features 500 international brands. It marks Lane Crawford’s 8th location in Greater China.

    The store hopes to bank on the rise of both international designer niche labels and the growing popularity of Chinese designers in China. It has dedicated 10,000 square feet to an area for new and emerging creative talents called The Hub, which currently features an exhibition created by design collective Neocha Edge. In addition to offering items by young international designers such as Proenza Schouler and Jason Wu, the store will sell pieces from the collections of Chinese designers Helen Lee, Ms Min, and Chictopia.

    “Global retail leadership is now coming from China, and the China customer is at the forefront of fashion. We set out to create the ultimate luxury fashion and lifestyle destination – the largest selection of luxury brands in an innovative, highly visual space, offering world-class service at a scale never before seen in Shanghai,” said Lane Crawford President Andrew Keith.

    The opening marks the return of the department store to Shanghai after it initially shut its previous location in the city in 2006. To celebrate its return to the city, it will be selling special charity T-shirts designed by Emilio Pucci, Proenza Schouler, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Jason Wu, Diane Von Furstenberg, and J. Crew featuring their interpretations of Shanghai, with proceeds which will be donated to UNICEF.
