Perhaps recognizing the growing importance of corporate social responsibility in China, or possibly as a shrewd PR move, on October 21 a group of Marriott cluster hotels from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Ningbo and Wuhan will team up to host the second annual Greater Shanghai Marriott Charity Gala Dinner. Held to benefit Shanghai Roots & Shoots, the China outpost of the charity founded in 1991 by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall (expanding to Shanghai in 1999), the event will take place at the JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai Tomorrow Square.

Coming on the heels of the Greater Shanghai Marriott Annual Golf Charity event, held this past June at the Shanghai Agile Bin Hai Golf Club, Marriott hopes to raise around 250,000 yuan (US$39,172) at the upcoming charity gala to achieve 500,000 yuan (US$78,345) in combined contributions from the two events. Marriott raised a grand total of 268,000 yuan at the recent golf charity event for Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ Million Tree Project, which is looking to plant one million trees in Kulun Qi, Inner Mongolia, by 2014 to combat desertification.

This month's charity gala dinner in Shanghai will include a cocktail reception at 7:00pm, followed by dinner at 8:00pm, raffle draw and auction at 9:30pm, and dance and entertainment at 10:00pm. With an overriding theme of "sustainability and green initiatives," the event will include organic table centerpieces and a living moss wall as a photo backdrop, along with the usual gala-dinner features of live entertainment and a silent auction. Sponsored raffle prizes will include a round-trip economy ticket from Shanghai to London on Virgin Airlines with a two-night stay at the Grosvenor House.

Tickets for the event are priced at 1,200 yuan (US$188) per person or 10,000 yuan ($1,567) per table of ten. For ticket information, contact Shanghai Roots & Shoots at (86 21) 6352 3580 or events@jgi-shanghai.org.
