Today, the Chinese arts portal Artxun (博宝艺术网) reports on a unique fundraiser set to be held in China next month, for which some of China’s top contemporary artists have donated more than 30 works of art to be auctioned off, with all proceeds going towards Haiti earthquake relief.

According to Artxun (Chinese), Cai Guo-Qiang, the main sponsor of this fundraiser, said:

With China’s growing economic strength, it’s important for the country to assume more responsibility in the international community. In Wenchuan (site of 2008′s devastating Sichuan earthquake — JD) after the earthquake, we received a great deal of attention from the international community and donors from around the world.

“In the face of the disaster in Haiti, along with the active assistance of the [Chinese] government, civil society and individuals also need to show a spirit of selflessness and be good samaritans. This is especially true for China’s contemporary artists, who have received the support of the international community for years. We need to be there for the people of Haiti, to give them a modest contribution to help rebuild their homes.”

According to the article, some of the contemporary artists who have already donated works of art to Cai’s fundraiser include Chen Danqing, Xu Bing, Zeng Fanzhi, Liu Xiaodong, Yu Hong, and Sui Jianguo. The auction will be conducted in late March by China Guardian. Jing Daily will be sure to keep an eye on this story and follow up as more details are released, but it’s probably safe to assume that the auction will attract no shortage of New Chinese Collectors looking to get their hands on some excellent works of art by their country’s top artists. Best of all, the money will go to a good cause.
